Plan

Decision making, give yourself at least 4-6 weeks.

1

Work out what you need vs. what you want

Kitchens need to do a lot of heavy lifting, so before you start making any decisions take the time to think about what you need from your space and how you use it. Ultimately you need to work out the trade offs you're prepared to make to prioritise features like new appliances, extra storage, and improved lighting versus a particularly beautiful marble countertop or large kitchen island with space for the whole family at breakfast time.

2

Work out your budget

Set a budget at the very beginning to help you make decisions on layout, quality of the kitchen carcass, appliances, worktops, taps and so on to avoid disappointment (or having to find extra cash) later on. Buying refurbished appliances is one way to save cash, and of course if you are keeping the same layout as your existing kitchen, you could even keep the carcasses you have, and change everything else.

3

Plan your space

There are lots of guidelines online about the “work triangle” - sink, fridge and cooker - and it can be a good place to start as the idea is basically about having the most important work areas within a short distance of each other. However kitchens are about so much more than the sink, fridge and cooker so it helps to think about the tasks you carry out in the kitchen and plan what you need to have in easy reach for those. For example, the sink, dishwasher and bins. The bar area, freezer and glasses cupboard. Explore your options, look for inspiration and plot out alternative plans wall by wall until you find a layout that ticks the boxes of what you are trying to achieve. The other side to planning the kitchen layout is about having enough work space, storage and room to move around - aim for a minimum of 90cm clearance between units.

Get and compare quotes

Getting recommendations from people you know and trust is THE most reliable way to find quality trades.

* If you are working with an architect they will often create a contract for you. If you're working directly with a general builder / contractor or individual trades, it would typically be the builder or trades that provides a contract. If your chosen trades don't provide you with a contract, ask for one. If they don't already have a standard contract template they use, they can easily find one online. For example, The Federation of Master Builders provide contract templates for their members to use.

Prepare

From at least 6 weeks before work starts, which includes a 2 week returns window (you will need it!) dependent on lead times.

6

Get ready for the work

You want to be as ready as possible ahead of work starting. Do this by preparing your home, and make sure to clarify all the little details with your trades, in writing ideally.

Renovation work

A typical kitchen renovation takes around 5-8 weeks, however this will of course depend on the level of work you are doing (especially if this is a part of wider building work) and the choices you've made.

7

Demolition (3-5 days)

Feels like a lot of progress has been made in little time!

8

Building work (1-2 weeks)

9

First fix plumbing & electrics (2-3 days)

10

Plastering walls & preparing the floor (2-3 days)

11

Install Kitchen cabinets (3-5 days)

12

Worktop and splashback installation (2-4 days)

13

Second fix plumbing & electrics (1 day)

14

Decorating / finishing (2-3 days)

15

Snagging and fixing (1-2 days)

Throughout the renovation work, make sure you deal with issues quickly! It might seem obvious, but it's far better to tackle any issues you see there and then rather than wait it out. 😅

If something does come up that you haven't planned for (it happens!) make sure it's talked about in detail so that everyone understands the work and cost involved. If your trade doesn't offer up information about how a change or issue resolution will affect the cost, be sure to ask directly. There's nothing worse than an unexpected cost at the end of the project when the work's all done and it's too late to change your mind!
